A rug that is too short can seem isolated under the coffee table; A rug that is too large can encroach on walkways. To choose a three-seater sofa, start from the measurements of the furniture and the area you want to bring together. The name “three-seater” does not correspond to a single width.
Start by deciding what the rug should bring together
Do you want to connect only the sofa and the coffee table, or also include an armchair? Draw this group on a simple plane. The carpet can highlight the limits, but it does not necessarily have to cover the entire living room.
Two layouts are easy to compare: a carpet which goes under the front of the seats, or a large carpet which accommodates all the furniture in the living room area. The IKEA design guide presents these possibilities; these are decorative options, not mandatory rules for each home.
Measure the right way
Note the overall width of the sofa, including armrests. On a rectangular rug, specify which dimension will be parallel to the sofa. A format advertised as “160 × 230 cm” can be placed in both directions: this choice completely changes the space available on the sides.
Then note the depth of the area: portion under the sofa, space in front of the seat, depth of the table and margin beyond. These elements form a chain of measures. Do not choose the depth of the rug based on its width alone.
Compare two sizes with an example
Let's take a fictitious sofa 210 cm wide. A rug whose side of 230 cm is parallel to the sofa protrudes by 10 cm at each end if it is centered. With a side of 300 cm, the overhang reaches 45 cm. These values illustrate the proportions; they are neither the dimensions of an Oléa sofa nor a universal recommendation.
The first format may be suitable for a small group. The second can better connect an armchair placed next to it, provided that the living room really offers this space. Also look at the depth: a wide but shallow mat can leave the table straddling its edge.
Do a full-size test before purchasing
Demarcate the two formats envisaged with sheets of paper or a tape adapted to the floor, tested in a discreet place. Place your table and observe the whole thing from the entrance, then from the sofa. If you plan to move heavy furniture, get help and protect the covering.
- Check that the table is stable, without a leg resting on a thick edge.
- Locate routes to the window, kitchen and storage areas.
- Open nearby doors to check their clearance.
- Examine the location of the edge of the mat where you usually get up.
If the large format cuts a path, move the whole thing or compare another format. Systematically reducing the carpet is not the only solution: the layout of the table or a seat can also change.
Look at the thickness as well as the length
Before ordering, consult the thickness, the type of backrest and the maintenance instructions for the carpet. Check the compatibility of a possible underlay with your floor and, if applicable, with underfloor heating. A photograph cannot confirm these points.
For a home where movement must remain particularly easy, pay attention to rising edges and changes in level. The choice should correspond to the people who use the room, not just a composition seen online.
Apply this method to an Oléa sofa
If you are considering the Nuvé three-seater sofa Cobalt blue, obtain its exact dimensions before selecting the rug. Its designation is not enough to determine a compatible format. For the place of the sofa itself, also consult our measurement guide for a small living room.
Do you necessarily need a rug wider than the sofa?
It is a useful visual cue for framing the living room area, but your room may require another solution. Compare the whole group: a rug must have a legible relationship with the furniture, without hindering daily use. The right size is the one you have tested in your own setting.
