A reading corner does not always require an additional armchair. An end of the sofa, a suitable light and a few objects within reach may be enough. The challenge is to create a place that is easy to use, then to put back in order when the living room returns to its other functions.
Choose the side based on your habits
Try both ends of the sofa with a book. Observe the light, the passage of other occupants and access to an outlet. The most photogenic side is not necessarily the one where you will want to sit for a long time.
A location near a window can be nice during the day, but check the reflections on the pages or on your e-reader. If this side is in front of a door or on a frequent journey, it is better to choose a place that is a little less visually isolated, but quieter to use.
Test the seat before adding accessories
Sit in your usual position and check that you can hold the book without remaining leaning forward. Try an existing cushion if it improves your comfort. Avoid stacking cushions simply to imitate a photo: they can reduce the available space and require permanent adjustments.
The seat depth and shape of the armrests vary depending on the model. There is therefore no cushion assembly valid for all sofas. If the position remains uncomfortable, change place or configuration rather than multiplying objects.
Giving reading its own light
General lighting in the living room can leave your book in the shadows. An adjustable lamp allows you to direct the light towards the pages without lighting the entire room in the same way. Test from a seated position: the source should not obstruct your gaze directly or reflect uncomfortably on the screen of an e-reader.
Place the lamp so as not to block the light with your head or shoulder. Adjust its orientation before trying to increase power. In the evening, also check that the beam does not disturb a person sitting nearby or watching television.
Choose a stable lamp, consistent with its use and its manufacturer's instructions. Route the cable out of the way and do not crush it under a furniture leg. For a wall light requiring a new connection, have the installation evaluated by a qualified person.
Add a useful surface, not one more piece of furniture out of reflex
A small side table can accommodate the book and glasses. Before purchasing, try an existing surface and check its height from the sofa. You must be able to place an object without contorting yourself or having to get up each time.
If space is limited, start by moving the coffee table. An armrest tray is only an option if it is compatible with the shape and covering of the sofa, stable and used according to its instructions. Do not place a hot drink on a soft or unstable surface.
Keep storage deliberately small
Reserve a basket or part of a shelf for reading in progress. A few well-chosen books are easier to use than a pile that ends up taking up the seat. Place this storage without blocking the opening of a piece of furniture or the passage behind the sofa.
In a shared living room, agree on a simple reorganization: the book returns to the basket, the cushion remains on the seat and the lamp keeps its place. The reading corner becomes a function of the living room, rather than a space that requires moving several objects every day.
Prepare your project around an Oléa sofa
The Nuvé three-seater sofa Cobalt blue can be part of your furniture selection. Before choosing a model for this use, confirm the seat dimensions, the shape of the armrests and the comfort information useful to your reading style. A color or a "three-seater" designation does not allow these characteristics to be deduced.
Your test in ten minutes
- Choose one end of the sofa and sit down with your book.
- Check the daylight, then plan a test in the evening.
- Place a stable surface within reach.
- Keep a storage for current reading only.
- Check the passages, cables and the space left for other occupants.
Start with what you already have. The test will reveal whether a lamp or table is really missing, and will prevent you from buying an armchair you don't need.
