A sofa can do something other than look at a wall: placed back, it draws the boundary of the living room without closing the room. His file becomes a low boundary between conversation, meals and circulation. But moving it to the center does not automatically improve the layout. If each path requires a detour or the chairs bump against its back, the separation costs more space than it provides.
Here's a method for deciding where to put it, what to leave behind, and how to test three common configurations before rearranging everything.
Start with the paths, not the center of the room
"In the middle" doesn't exactly mean at the geometric center. The good location is the one which demarcates one use while allowing the others to function. Trace the entrance–kitchen, kitchen–table and entrance–window paths on a sketch. Add the opening of doors, radiators and furniture used daily.
Then choose the main route to preserve. It can go behind the backrest or along one end, but should not systematically cut between the people seated and the coffee table. First position the sofa in relation to this path, then adjust the dining area around it.
- To be preferred: legible circulation, without slalom between an armrest, a chair and a sideboard.
- To check: the passage when the furniture is in use, not only when it is stored.
- To be avoided : align the sofa to the millimeter with the room at the cost of being strangled in front of a door.
Three criteria for choosing the right separation
1. What we see from each zone
From the table, look at the file; from the entrance, look at the side of the sofa; Once seated, look at the entire room. A successful implantation must remain pleasant in these three positions. In particular, check the rear finish, the possible presence of cables and access to windows. A sofa photographed only from the front deserves additional views before purchasing for a central position.
2. What the separation lets through
A backrest draws a visual limit, not an acoustic partition. It does not eliminate kitchen conversations or cooking smells. If the objective is mainly to isolate yourself to work, moving the sofa will not be enough. To distinguish the living room from the meal while maintaining exchanges and the view, on the other hand, this lower limit can be relevant.
3. What we must be able to move
Do you regularly receive several people? Is it necessary to access a bed, move a table or completely open a bay? Check these situations before finalizing the layout. A slightly offset separation, with a clearer end, can be more useful than a perfectly symmetrical composition.
Three configurations to try at home
Case 1: a rectangular room, living room then dining room
Try the sofa transversely along the length of the room, with your back to the table. Its file marks the transition between the two uses. Reserve a continuous passage on the side that best connects the entrance and the kitchen; it is not necessary to create two identical passages.
The decisive point is behind the chairs. Seat one person at the table, push another chair back as if to stand up, then try to pass. If the sofa blocks this movement, move the table away or shift the whole thing. Adding a console behind the backrest would then aggravate the problem.
Case 2: an entrance which opens directly into the living room
A sofa positioned so as to present its back or side to the entrance can make the living room less exposed. The arrival is then along the seated area, rather than in the middle of the conversation. However, keep a clear view of the passage to be taken: additional furniture should not turn the entrance into a dead end.
Test this arrangement by returning with shopping or a bulky bag. If you need to brush against the backrest or go around a very tight end, move the divider back. The goal is to welcome naturally, not to make a hallway with furniture.
Case 3: a large open room with an office space
Orient the sofa towards the living room and place the work area on the other side, without assuming that the desk must touch the backrest. Let the chair move back and access the storage. The sofa can be enough to distinguish the uses: a high bookcase added immediately behind risks closing the perspective unnecessarily.
Also check the route of the cables. A light or a charger must not require crossing the passage with an extension cord. If no suitable power supply is available, change the location of the workstation rather than improvising a connection in traffic.
What to put behind the sofa? Sometimes, nothing
A visible sofa back is not a space that must be filled. Leaving it free preserves the passage and makes the separation lighter. A console can be used as a storage space, but only if its use is real and if it does not reduce the movement of chairs or access to the sofa.
Before adding anything, mark its footprint on the floor. Check the protruding angles, stability and the manufacturer's fixing instructions. Avoid accumulating tall or fragile objects on an area that is regularly touched. The right question is: “What does this piece of furniture do?” ", rather than "How to fill this void?" ".
Choose the sofa according to this layout
For a central position, examine the rear and side views, the total size and the maintenance conditions accessible from the passages. In the Oléa catalog, the Nuvé 3-seater sofa – Cobalt blue is an avenue to compare to your project. Consult its sheet and ask for confirmation of the dimensions and the rear finish if you are missing this information: its presence in this selection does not guarantee that it is suitable for your plan.
Above all, compare the actual volume to the space available once the table, its chairs and the routes have been drawn. A sofa is not suitable simply because it fits between two walls.
The final check in five steps
- Mark on the ground the outline of the sofa and any furniture planned behind it.
- Walk the usual routes with the doors open.
- Use the table with the chairs pushed back and the desk with one person seated.
- Look at the whole thing from the entrance, the table and the sofa.
- Keep this organization for a few days with your current furniture, when possible, before buying the complements.
Frequently asked questions
Is it always necessary to leave a passage behind the sofa?
No. The passage can be done to the side if this correctly connects the areas. On the other hand, do not count as circulation an occupied interval as soon as a chair moves back.
Should the backrest be parallel to the table?
This is a simple option to read, not an obligation. First align uses and movements. A slight offset between table and sofa can free up the main path.
How do you know if the separation is too strong?
If it obscures access to an area, requires detours or cuts off a view you enjoy, try shifting the sofa rather than adding furniture. A successful limit organizes the room without complicating daily life.
